Demps Presents:
Unwoven Threads
Weaving spans 30,000 years of human history, embodying spirituality, status, and artistry. Today’s machine-made woven fabrics have lost these qualities.
I seek to reintroduce artistry into these fabrics through dissection and reassembly.
My process-driven approach is based in a fascination with duality, or the tension that exists in all things in balance. These themes stem from my upbringing as someone who’s both biracial and queer. My art is cathartic; I destroy the fabrics until they need to be mended back together in order to make any sense, and then sit down and figure out how to breathe life back in through tension. Stretched across frames, my medium combines deconstructed fabrics, fibers, and handmade buttons, to create intricate, tactile landscapes. In the end, every last thread, stretched, glued, and tied, creates more than the sum of the whole.
Thanks for checking out my art, stay tuned for more!
